WSSU will move to I-AA this fall
Winston-Salem State will open spring football practice today, and to say that there's a different feel to it than in past springs would be an understatement. The Rams are technically still in the NCAA's Division II, but they will begin their move into Division I-AA in the fall.

Savannah State signs 11 to letters of intent
Instead of monitoring high school football players' signed letters of intent as they arrived by fax Wednesday morning, Savannah State coach Richard Basil was stuck at jury duty. "Hey, man, you've got to serve," Basil said, laughing. "I thought about going up to the judge and pleading my case, but I didn't think National Signing Day was a hardship."

SSU's Carson battling rare blood disorder
Former Savannah State two-sport athlete Donald Carson has been in and out of hospitals since mid-December when he was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, a rare and serious blood disorder that is caused when bone marrow fails to produce enough white and red blood cells and platelets.

McCray taps into Falcons defensive backfield
LaDarius Davis frightened defenses with his speed, and hounded receivers with his quickness. Those talents should translate nicely in an Austin Peay uniform. The Fort Campbell two-way starter decided on Sunday he'd like to play for the Govs and head coach Carroll McCray next season and made his verbal commitment.

SSU coach anxious for Washington-Seattle game
Two Savannah residents who are former NFL players have a keen interest in the outcome of today's divisional playoff game between the Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks. Edwin Bailey, who is preparing for his third season as Savannah State's offensive line coach, and Charlie Brown, who was hired last July as Savannah High School's football head coach, said they plan to meet and watch the 4:30 p.m. game on Fox.

Donald Carson has shown that loyalty still exists. The Savannah State senior likely will record a double-double Saturday, but not the kind an athlete wants. Instead of finishing with double-digits in scoring and rebounding, Carson could finish winless in two sports.
