Blacknall takes over A&M line
Anthony Jones hired an old friend to fill Alabama A&M's vacant defensive line coaching position. Ben Blacknall, whom Jones tried to hire last year as offensive coordinator, was named the Bulldogs' defensive line coach last week. Blacknall replaced Cedric Calhoun, who left last month for a similar position at Dartmouth College.

Gilarski kicks way to football scholarship
Saturday, Gilarski announced he will accept a scholarship offer from Mississippi Valley State to be a place kicker for the Division I-AA school that produced Jerry Rice. (Zack)Gilarski, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound 17-year-old, is the first football player from King Kekaulike to receive a Division I football scholarship.

ASU coach promises tough, contact-filled spring
Usually, spring football practice is a rather light affair. Most of the practice days are spent in helmets and shorts, with the quarterbacks and receivers working on timing and the linemen getting their footwork and blocking assignments in order. Easy, non-taxing stuff. But that's not what Alabama State head coach Charlie Coe has in mind this year.

A&M looking for good hands people

Grambling assistant arrives 'fired up'
New defensive line coach Brett Beard promises to bring a youthful spark to his work at Grambling State. "I'm pretty fired up," said Beard, a 25-year-old Birmingham, Ala., native who still resembles the nickname given to him by his former teammates at Vanderbilt: Bull.

A&M falls just shy of standard
The Alabama A&M football program was among 99 teams nationwide that face penalties after failing to meet new NCAA academic standards. The Bulldogs could lose one football scholarship. That was A&M's only penalty in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) report released Wednesday for Division I.
