Newest ‘cradle of coaches’pops up at EIU
For many years, Miami of Ohio had been known as “the cradle of coaches.’’ The university earned that label by producing a flurry of top college football coaches in the 1950s and ’60s. Woody Hayes. Bo Schembechler. Ara Parseghian. Bill Mallory. John Pont. Even now, there are three head football coaches in the Big Ten with Miami ties. Visit Website ]

NFL: Seahawks' Tatupu could have been a Panther (Maine)
Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren could not believe what he was seeing. As a play unfolded in the Seahawks' divisional playoff game last week against the Washington Redskins, Holmgren noticed rookie middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu running about 40 yards downfield, helping his defensive backs in deep coverage. NFL: Former EIU quarterback to coach NFL’s Saints (Eastern Illinois)
Former Eastern Illinois quarterback Sean Payton is expected to be named as the New Orleans Saints new head coach as soon as today. Although Saints officials have remained mum during their search for a replacement for ex-New Orleans coach Jim Haslett, numerous media reports, including the Associated Press, indicate that Payton has accepted the job and will be introduced during an afternoon press conference at the team’s Metarie, Louisiana practice facility. NFL: Life in the League (Northern Colorado)
Life is good for Vincent Jackson. So good, that if you're Jackson, you occasionally slip and concede that "it's really sort of ridiculous." Jackson, who turned 23 on Saturday, just completed his first season as a wide receiver for the San Diego Chargers, less than one year removed from an unforgettable career at the University of Northern Colorado, where the only thing resembling "ridiculous" were the record-setting numbers he put up with 3,548 yards and 37 career touchdowns. Extra Point - I-AA Rookies Fare Well in NFL
How about No. 1 draft choice Alex Smith? Or maybe running backs Carnell Williams or Ronnie Brown, or Pro Bowl linebacker Shawne Merriman. No, No and No again. The only rookie to make the All-Pro team was Houston Texan, and Hampton product, Jerome Mathis. The speedy Mathis had an excellent season to earn an All-Pro nod as a kick returner, and was just one of many examples of I-AA alums shedding the "small-school" label and producing in their first NFL campaign. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair has made the transformation from player to fan for tonight's Rose Bowl. NFL: Rice waltzes into retirement (MVSU)
HE USED to be called "Fifi" by his teammates in his early days with the 49ers. This week, perhaps we'll discover that "Twinkle Toes" is an even more appropriate nickname for Jerry Rice. At 8 p.m. Thursday on ABC, Rice will appear on the Season 2 premiere of "Dancing with the Stars." The future Hall of Famer is one of 10 celebrity dancers who will be teamed up with 10 professional dancers. Visit Website ]

NFL: Adams struts his stuff after TD return (Delaware)
SAN FRANCISCO - Mike Adams had one thing on his mind when he intercepted Tony Banks' pass late in the third quarter of Sunday's 20-17 win over the Houston Texans. "I was thinking about my dance," the 49ers defensive back said, "because me and 'Spence' are always talking about what we're going to do." Visit Website ]
