Ex-Jay starts at DE as UNI takes aim on championship
Another week, another former Jefferson City Jay playing for a NCAA national football championship. Sophomore Jordan Lacy, a 2003 graduate of JCHS, and the Northern Iowa Panthers (11-3) will meet Appalachian State (11-3) for the Division I-AA title at 7 p.m. Friday (ESPN2) in Chattanooga, Tenn.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- First the cake, now the icing. Appalachian State - in the NCAA Division I-AA championship game for the first time - will try for its first national title tonight. The Mountaineers will play Northern Iowa, another first-time finalist, for top honors.

Chattanooga, Tenn. — Workers rolled new turf onto Finley Stadium. Crews wheeled ESPN2 cameras into place. A parade unfolded along the Scenic City's streets, honoring Northern Iowa and Appalachian State, teams poised to compete in today's Division I-AA national football championship game.

Common ground
The friendship was forged between the quarterbacks in the spring of 2003, when the mountains surrounding Boone were becoming lush and green, not white and barren as they are now, early in what promises to be a cold, long winter.
But today, hundreds of miles and nearly three years from those days of spring football practice at Appalachian State, Richie Williams and Trey Elder are the central figures as the Mountaineers play Northern Iowa for the NCAA Division I-AA championship at Chattanooga's Finley Stadium.

Mountaineers enjoy week of firsts
Snowy practices are rare for Appalachian State’s football program. So are e-mails from foreign countries and visits from preschool children. But after the Mountaineers advanced to their first Division I-AA national title game by defeating Furman on Saturday, very little is normal in Boone anymore.

Sellout Still Expected For I-AA Game
Approximately 1,000 tickets remain available for Friday night's Division I-AA national championship football game between Northern Iowa and Appalachian State at Finley Stadium. Game director Scott Smith said Northern Iowa returned approximately 1,500 tickets, and 500 of those were sold on Wednesday.

Surface keeps game at Finley
Lush, green grass covered Finley Stadium's field in the days and hours leading up to the kickoff of last year's NCAA Division I-AA championship game. Once the game started, everybody in attendance - and the national-television viewers - saw that things aren't always as they appear. With almost every turn of a player's cleat, clumps of the newly installed sod scattered everywhere.

Adrenaline rush outweighs aches, pains
CEDAR FALLS -- If John Hermann’s body replaced that of the cartoon-like patient in the board game “Operation,” you’d likely hear one long, droning buzzer these days. Just as any stray blow to the bread basket of the aforementioned game’s main character left him wailing in agony, there’s scarcely any real estate on Hermann’s body that doesn’t ache these days.

Gateway looking to claim Division I-AA title
Northern Iowa will try to become the fourth member of the Gateway Conference for football to win an NCAA Division I-AA championship Friday night. The Panthers meet Appalachian State in Chattanooga, Tenn., for the 2005 championship. Both teams take 11-3 marks into the contest that will be televised by ESPN2.
