Common ground
The friendship was forged between the quarterbacks in the spring of 2003, when the mountains surrounding Boone were becoming lush and green, not white and barren as they are now, early in what promises to be a cold, long winter.
But today, hundreds of miles and nearly three years from those days of spring football practice at Appalachian State, Richie Williams and Trey Elder are the central figures as the Mountaineers play Northern Iowa for the NCAA Division I-AA championship at Chattanooga's Finley Stadium.

Surface keeps game at Finley
Lush, green grass covered Finley Stadium's field in the days and hours leading up to the kickoff of last year's NCAA Division I-AA championship game. Once the game started, everybody in attendance - and the national-television viewers - saw that things aren't always as they appear. With almost every turn of a player's cleat, clumps of the newly installed sod scattered everywhere. Visit Website ]

Adrenaline rush outweighs aches, pains
CEDAR FALLS -- If John Hermann’s body replaced that of the cartoon-like patient in the board game “Operation,” you’d likely hear one long, droning buzzer these days. Just as any stray blow to the bread basket of the aforementioned game’s main character left him wailing in agony, there’s scarcely any real estate on Hermann’s body that doesn’t ache these days.
