College GameDay taking on a life of its own
TUSCALOOSA, ALA. - Saturday marked the fifth time I have visited the set of ESPN's College GameDay. The previous four visits took place in Texas, at Texas A&M or Texas or at the State Fair of Texas for the Texas-Oklahoma game, and I find it hard to believe the first one took place six years ago, in 1999.

ESPNU puts focus on college sports
When ESPNU launched in March of this year, it was tabbed as the all college sports network. Since then, the network has brought the spotlight to schools that may not get much publicity. South Carolina State has already appeared on the network three times this season, including last nights home game against Morgan State University.

The Mountain West and CSTV are linked to the future. It's a done deal. Thank ESPN for the memories. But the CBS acquisition of CSTV just made the partnership sweeter. There are myriad reasons why last week's $325 million purchase of CSTV by CBS made the future TV home of the conference much brighter and exciting.

Spurrier adds to ESPN criticism
Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville has picked up support for his contention that ESPN has too much power over college football. "They do have a lot of power — and I wish they would use it fairly," South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Wednesday. "I wish they would say everybody is pretty good and leave it at that rather than maybe picking out some schools, saying how great they are and how wonderful it is there compared to other places.

CSTV Heading for CBS Campus?
Viacom Inc.’s CBS network is in talks to buy independent College Sports Television, according to people familiar with the talks. Should the deal happen, it would place CSTV -- which operates a linear TV network and an extensive Web business tied to the realm of collegiate athletics -- under CBS Sports and, ultimately, CBS Corp. That company is being split from other assets at Viacom, which is moving toward being divided into two companies by year’s end.

Rix speaking from experience at Fox
Chris Rix has a different spin on the broadcasting business. A positive one. The former Santa Margarita High standout endured plenty of negative press at Florida State. Now that he's on the other side of the microphone as a high school football analyst for Fox Sports Net and a college analyst for Fox Sports Radio, he is calling an audible. Rix won't make outrageously critical comments just so he can advance his career.
