Title is pure APPiness
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - All Richie Williams had to offer Friday was his right arm. Appalachian State's defense handled the rest as the Mountaineers beat Northern Iowa 21-16 for the NCAA Division I-AA football championship. With Williams directing a key third-quarter scoring drive and defensive end Jason Hunter scoring the winning touchdown on a 15-yard fumble recovery, the Mountaineers won their first title -- and the state of North Carolina's first NCAA football championship on any level.

Title game provides electric feel for Finley
Now this was fun. This was what we always imagined a national championship football game could be inside Finley Stadium, but it rarely was when any team other than Georgia Southern was in the house. To come to The Fin on Friday night for Appalachian State’s 21-16 NCAA Division I-AA title-game victory over Northern Iowa was to witness an atmosphere worthy of this game’s import.

Good show!
Congratulations to Appalachian State, the 2005 I-AA National Champions! The 2005 I-AA Championship was the greatest yet in Chattanooga. The local community, led by new Finley Stadium steward Frank Burke, supported the game more than ever and the ASU Mountaineers and Northern Iowa Panthers sure did their part, too. The finalists filled Finley and put on a fantastic display of college football. While we felt a little sad for the UNI fans who made the long trek, you have to feel good for the deserving Appy State fans and head coach Jerry Moore. Both teams will return plenty of experience next season and will no doubt build an appetite for another go at title time. But it takes a really special season to make it all the way to the championship game, so for now, UNI fans, ASU fans, Chattanoogans and I-AA supporters... just bask in the warm wake of a terrific, successful playoff experience in the NCAA's premiere football classification.

Support: Family backs ASU's Moore
It's not every year that Appalachian State plays for a national championship, so just about everybody in Coach Jerry Moore's family was here for last night's NCAA Division I-AA title game. Leading the cheers from her third-row seat on the visitors side of Finley Stadium was Moore's wife, Margaret, who has lived through all of the ups and downs of being a coach's wife. They have been married 45 years, so last night's game was something that the Moores have been waiting for for a long time.

A mountain too tall
Chattanooga, Tenn. — The magic finally wore thin, trampled by a furious pass rush and a banged-up quarterback. Northern Iowa's historic football season fell one win short of a final celebration Friday, as No. 5 Appalachian State won the NCAA Division I-AA championship, 21-16, before an announced crowd of 20,236 at Finley Stadium.

Time runs out on UNI's title hopes
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The thrill ride that has been the University of Northern Iowa's 2005 football season screeched to a halt here Friday night in the NCAA Division I-AA national championship game. Fifth-ranked Appalachian State finally pulled the plug on a Panther team that kept its fans on the edge of their seats for the better part of seven weeks as they won their last seven games to reach the biggest show in I-AA.
