West Alabama Athletic Director Dee Outlaw announced on Wednesday that Bobby Wallace has been named the new head football coach at The University of West Alabama, effective immediately.

Search for new football coach begins
Two weeks after West Virginia State football coach Carl Lee resigned, the school will begin the search today for his successor. State athletic director Robert Parker said Thursday the search committee and chairman have been formally appointed and will meet for the first time at 10 a.m. today to begin laying the groundwork for the hiring process.

UND AD eyes $35M fund-raiser for sports facilities
UND's top athletic official said Tuesday that campus sports facilities already are comparable to those of competitive Division I schools, but no matter which level UND competes in the future, a major fund-raising effort is needed to keep them that way. Athletic Director Tom Buning said UND could launch a $35 million capital campaign in the near future to maintain its existing new athletic facilities, for upgrades, or for new facilities.

Varsity sports cut at Slippery Rock
After five years of evaluating the athletic program, Slippery Rock University will eliminate eight varsity sports -- men's golf, men's and women's swimming, water polo, field hockey, men's and women's tennis and wrestling -- at the end of the spring semester.

League is looking at Pennsylvania schools
The West Virginia Conference is considering expansion outside the Mountain State's boundaries. The Princeton-based WVC has received formal membership applications from two Pennsylvania schools and its school presidents will formally consider those applications when they meet at the WVC basketball tournament in Charleston in early March.

GVSU athletic director Selgo faces questions on future
What's next? There's no denying Grand Valley State's athletics program is the cream of the crop in NCAA Division II -- and, for that matter, all of small-college sports. The Lakers have won three of the past four national football championships. They've won the past two U.S. Sports Academy Director's Cup standings (Division II's version of an all sports trophy). Thanks to national titles in football and women's volleyball this fall, they're well on their way to a third. But are the Lakers at a high point or a cross roads?
