Auld lang syne, my friends
As we say good-bye to 2005, are we also saying good-bye to I-AA football as we know it? There is a strong likelihood that next year's premiere NCAA football championship will be played under a new banner. So, be sure to stay tuned for another exciting year, preceded by almost nine months of interesting developments that you won't want to miss. ...What will I-AA's new name be? ...Will Appalachian State be able to repeat without Richie Williams? ...Among today's stories, see that unsurprisingly, UTC has signed more I-A transfers. As he continues to build the program, the relevant question must be, can Coach Allison keep them on campus and out of trouble? If you haven't weighed in yet with your opinions and suggestions on the future of I-AA Football, today's the last day of our extensive online survey (see below)... So, see you next year, I-AA Supporters!

Merry Christmas, College Football Supporters
Nearing the end of the 28th year of I-AA football, here's hoping that you and your family have a blessed holiday season. Here are a few last-minute suggestions for stocking stuffers: For I-AA leaders, some real enhancements, beyond what has been proferred via NCAA committees... For App State fans, many happy returns... For Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley, a draw play or screen pass for the Panther playbook. Alternatively, more analgesics, bandages, and more pads for your QB's... For Lehigh fans, a coach close to as good as Pete Lembo... For Georgia Southern fans, more than two seasons from Brian VanGorder... For University of North Dakota president Dr. Charles E. Kupchella, peace. The peace to stop raging against the machine and North Dakota State. Admit that you messed up by not moving to Division I with NDSU. Just make the commitment and stop trying to change the whole NCAA classification structure... For I-AA voters, a clue. Anyone who believes that the San Diego Toreros are in the same universe as scholarship programs should have his balloting privleges revoked... For some lucky college football program, one of the best football coaches available, Daryl Daye. Daye was scapegoated out of Nicholls State by the guy who really should have been canned. Yet Daye holds no grudges, and should be recognized for the incredible job he did in cleaning up a cesspool and turning it into a playoff program... For Coach Daye: a Nashville recording contract for your catchy country original songs, and a position befitting your talents, at a school with a strong leader in the AD's office... For David Bailiff, hope your prayers are answered, and that they don't require any "kneeling" in the waning moments of playoff play... For FAMU, well, your prayers have already been answered when you finally brought in a guy with integrity: Nelson Townsend. If anyone can right the ship in Tallahassee, it is the esteemed and accomplished N.T. You had to love his introduction at FAMU earlier this week, when he brought along three books to share, that he intended to employ in his daunting task: A Bible, an NCAA rulebook, and a checkbook. He further displayed his sense of humor in explaining FAMU's recent spate of NCAA violations: "What they found is, although they have over 200 violations, they are really about seven or eight charges. It is like committing a murder. Did you shoot the same guys 95 times or did you shoot 95 different guys? They are not mass murderers. They shot the same guy 94 times, then shot another guy 79 times. Out of the 200 violations, 173 of them are two items where they kept doing the same thing over." So, here's to humorous, healthy, and happy holidays, and a blessed New Year! --Otto

Can FAU financial fiasco be "'Topped"?
The full headline for the story of Florida Atlantic's football-fueled athletics budget crisis should have been:
ROBBING PETER (AND THE REST OF THE STUDENT BODY AND FLORIDA TAXPAYERS) TO PAY HOWARD.
The only surprising aspect of this story is how FAU officials can keep a straight face while reacting to news that the Sun Belt-bound Owls are bleeding red ink in I-A. Since Howard Schnellenberger arrived, FAU has been spending money like they were printing it, with a "build it and they will come" mindset. This black hole of a program next wants to justify spending over $90 million for the domed stadium that Howard has been promising. FAU football may not belong in I-A, but the Division I-A Board of Directors and Myles Brand have already decided that strong standards are not the way to go, so only responsible officials can save FAU from its own blind ambitions. Also in the news recently is WKU's desire to run away from fiscal responsibility and join the Sun Belt football circus. Good luck, 'Toppers. Hope you enjoyed that '02 title. May you fare better than FAU, FIU, ULM, ULL, Idaho, FAMU, and a dozen other sad sack programs before you. Yes, there was also Marshall and Boise State, but those two had strong support before leaving I-AA. There is plenty of evidence available, WKU. So, if you choose act like an 18-year-old high school recruit and make a "Sun Belt mistake," please start by building a monument to the 2002 I-AA National Champion WKU Hilltoppers now. Odds are there won't be enough money left in a few years to pay tribute to WKU's football peak.

SUPER BOWL loaded with I-AA alumni
You want irony? Here we are, just days after National Signing Day -- when many teenagers each year make a "Sun Belt mistake" by short-sightedly committing their college eligibility to a pathetic MAC or Sun Belt team because of the program's I-A designation... And on the most hyped day in US sports, professional football's marquee game features loads of athletes who did not play I-A football. 29 players from the official rosters of the Philadelphia Eagles and New Englad Patriots played collegiately in other subdivisions. That figure includes three individuals who competed in I-AA before their schools moved to I-A, and two who played in Division II before their alma mater upgraded to I-AA. Another ten played in Division II, Division III, or the NAIA. 14 of the players in pro football's championship game competed collegiately in I-AA football, at schools currently classified as I-AA football programs. In the NFL, the scouts found them, the execs signed them, the coaches kept them, and the fans adore them. Brian Westbrook, Terrell Owens, Adam Vinatieri, Jeremiah Trotter, and the others will play significant roles tonite in determining the NFL championship. Kinda makes you feel sorry for kids who signed on the wrong dotted lines for the wrong reasons, doesn't it?
