HEMPSTEAD, New York * Steve Zimmer, Hofstra University alumnus ('74) and former Pride quarterback, has been named to the seven-man crew of game officials to work Super Bowl XL at Detroit's Ford Field this Sunday.

Zimmer, who was the starting quarterback for the Pride in 1972 and 1973, will serve as field judge for referee Bill Leavy. Other members of the officiating crew include Garth DeFelice (umpire), Mark Hittner (head linesman), Mark Perlman (line judge), Tom Hill (side judge), and Bob Waggoner (back judge). The Super Bowl XL officiating crew collectively has 58 years of NFL officiating experience and 40 combined postseason game assignments, including three Super Bowls.

A ninth-year NFL official, Zimmer will be making his ninth post-season game appearance but his first trip to the Super Bowl. The Long Island attorney, who graduated from the Hofstra School of Law in 1977, was selected utilizing the NFL officiating program's evaluation system. That program dictates that the highest-rated officials at each position with the appropriate experience earn the right to work the Super Bowl. Super Bowl game officials must have five years of NFL experience and previous playoff assignments.

Zimmer completed 57% (146-254) of his passes for 1,540 and 14 touchdowns as a senior in 1973 for the 8-3 Pride. As a junior in 1972, an injury limited Zimmer's season to five games at quarterback during which he led the team in passing with 442 yards and two touchdowns. He was a CoSIDA Academic All-America second team selection in 1973.
