CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - University of Northern Iowa head football coach Mark Farley has received a contract extension through the 2011 season, UNI Director of Athletics Rick Hartzell announced today.
"I am thrilled to be able to have yet another of our great coaches under a long-term contract agreement," Hartzell said. "Mark has restored the deep-rooted pride in Panther football, and along with his excellent staff has brought us to the pinnacle of I-AA football. This program has nationwide respect and under Mark's leadership we expect that success to continue. We are truly indebted to the gifts of so many friends who have made this contract extension possible. Without that support, given our current budget constraints, we could not possibly do this sort of thing to keep great coaches at UNI. I look forward to working with Mark to continue our football success."
Farley, who guided UNI to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA I-AA national championship game in 2005, will receive an increase that will make his total compensation package exceed $180,000 by 2010. All funds for the salary increase came from private donations. Farley will continue to receive incentive bonuses and other perks.
The Waukon native has posted a 44-20 record in five seasons as the Panthers' head coach. He has captured three Gateway Conference titles (2001, 2003, 2005) since taking over the program in 2001. In 2005, he was named the Northwest Region Coach of the Year by Don Hansen's Football Gazette.
"I appreciate the confidence and support shown by our Athletic Director Rick Hartzell, University President Robert Koob and Vice President Tom Schellhardt with this extension," Farley said. "I feel fortunate to be a part of this community and University. This is a great place to be because of the people. I'm excited to be a part of this and I'm looking forward to this year and many more years to come as we continue to pursue excellence both on and off the field."
UNI has also been ranked in the final I-AA poll in four of Farley's five seasons. The Panthers finished the 2005 season ranked No. 2 in the nation with an 11-4 overall record. In 2004, Farley's squad was ranked No. 25 with a 7-4 mark. In 2003, UNI finished the season No. 5 in the poll with a 10-3 record. The Panthers were ranked No. 4 in the final 2001 poll after the squad reached the national semifinals and tallied an 11-3 overall record.
"We are thankful for the commitment and support from alumni, friends, and supporters of our athletic program," said UNI president Dr. Robert Koob. "At a time when the university continues to incur reductions to our general fund budgets, we have to rely on private financial support to recruit and retain our quality coaches and keep our programs competitive for the sake of our student-athletes."
Under Farley's direction in 2005, the Panthers set five school records. UNI gained 6,008 yards of total offense to set a new mark. UNI also scored 449 points and rushed for 32 touchdowns - both new single-season highs. The Panthers also ran a school-record 1,024 offensive plays and gained a program-best 298 first downs.
UNI's program continues to be one of the finest at the I-AA level with Farley at the helm. At the conclusion of the 2005 season, UNI boasted 10 active National Football League players - the highest representation for all I-AA schools.
