BOONE, N.C. — A sellout crowd of over 700 witnessed Appalachian State University football players and coaches receive their 2005 national title rings during Saturday night’s national championship banquet at the Holmes Center.
The banquet program included the presentation of the ADT national championship trophy, recognition of Appalachian’s all-America and all-Southern Conference performers and remarks from head coach Jerry Moore, Chancellor Dr. Kenneth E. Peacock, athletics director Charlie Cobb and ASU seniors Zach Johnson, Joe Suiter, Brad West and Richie Williams. The audience greeted the 2005 national champions with a standing ovation when they entered the arena and continued to shower the honorees with similar displays throughout the evening.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the championship rings, first for the program’s underclassmen, followed by the team’s 14 seniors, assistant coaches, Cobb, honorary coach Bob Turchin, Chancellor Peacock and finally, Moore. After Moore was presented with his ring by the 2005 squad’s tri-captains — Suiter, West and Williams — he closed the evening out with a stirring speech that recognized the invaluable role that so many people had in the run to the national title, from his players and assistant coaches to support staff and administration.
Confetti poured from the rafters as the ceremony ended with the sounds of the ASU marching band over the loud speakers.
With the final celebration of the 2005 season behind them, the Mountaineers turn their focus entirely to the 2006 campaign. The Apps continue preparations for their Sept. 2 season opener at NC State with the resumption of spring practice this week and close the spring on Sunday, April 9 with an intrasquad scrimmage at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Kickoff for the spring scrimmage is set for 2 p.m.
