NATCHITOCHES — Redshirt freshman quarterback Roch Charpentier completed 8 of 9 passes for 106 yards while rookie tailbacks Patrick Earl and Byron Lawrence each ran for nearly 70 yards Saturday morning as Northwestern State held a 45-play spring football scrimmage at Turpin Stadium.
The hour-long scrimmage was the last extensive scrimmage for the Demons before they wrap up spring drills next Saturday afternoon with the 17th Annual Joe Delaney Bowl spring game.
Earl ran for 61 yards on 10 carries. Lawrence led all rushers with 68 yards on six carries. Both backs, who each displayed hard-charging running styles, are redshirt freshmen.
Earl bulled in for a 1-yard touchdown. Charpentier tossed a 1-yard TD pass to Clayton Broyles. Junior defensive end Ray Martin returned a fumble 12 yards for another score.
“I saw good things on both sides of the ball,” said fifth-year head coach Scott Stoker. “We had too many foolish penalties offensively, especially in the red zone, but we moved the ball well. It was a good day’s work.”
Broyles had two catches for 36 yards. Chris Miller snagged two passes for 19 yards and returned the opening kickoff 50 yards. Dudley Guice also caught two passes for 19 yards.
