Another award for Penn State's Paterno

Joe Paterno, fresh off an 11-1 season culminating with a victory in the Orange Bowl, will add another awards dinner to his offseason schedule. Paterno joins five other Pittsburghers in various walks of life whom will be honored at the Fourteenth Annual History Makers Award Dinner on April 28 at the Westin Convention Center in Pittsburgh.  He joins Joe Namath, Franco Harris, Fred Rogers and Dan Rooney, among others, who were past honorees. Paterno remains the only active coach to receive the National Football Foundation's Distinguished American Award, an honor bestowed on him in 1991.

Sugar Bowl in good hands with new sponsor

The Sugar Bowl last week inked a new deal with Allstate to become the bowl's new partner, replacing Nokia as the title sponsor for one of the five Bowl Championship Series games.  Allstate agreed to a multiyear deal with the game, which will return to New Orleans following a one-year stint in Atlanta after Hurricane Katrina displaced the bowl.  As part of the agreement, Allstate will also be the title sponsor of the Allstate BCS National Championship Game, which will be played in New Orleans in January 2008.  In addition to the game, the bowl administers the Greater New Orleans Sports

Hall of Fame and the New Orleans Chapter of The National Football Foundation.

LSU Stadium expansion set for completion in June

Ongoing stadium renovations to Tiger Stadium at Louisiana State University will be completed on June 28, the school announced last week.  Orginally scheduled to be ready in time for the 2005 season, the construction, which includes adding 10,000 seats and 70 suites, was delayed by both Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita last year.  Plans also call for the stadium to receive a new playing surface and changes to the field's drainage system. LSU opens their home schedule this year on September 2 against Louisiana-Lafayette.
