STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern went through practice session number two of spring football drills Monday afternoon (March 27). The Eagles hit the field for more than two-and-a-half hours.

Monday’s practice in shorts and helmets was the last scheduled before the team plays in full pads starting Wednesday. According to head coach Brian VanGorder, the team looked sharper in some areas compared to Saturday’s first session.

“I thought our organization was much better. Coaches and players had better transitions in practice,” said the Eagles’ first-year head coach. “There’s a large installation of information and a different language than they are used to. They are getting a lot of things thrown out at them.”

Much like day one, the practice session was split between the offense and defense working on drills but again concluded with an 11-on-11 session. VanGorder noted the defense has a lot of work yet to do in learning the new schematics and terminology.

All three redshirt-freshmen took snaps at quarterback. Transfer Zach Stanford mainly ran with the ones while Chris Griffin worked with the second team and Lee Heaberlin also got work in. During offense versus defense skeleton drills, the offense lined up in multiple sets including: four wide receivers, three wideouts with a tight end and also wide receivers with a running back.

Two other players switched sides of the ball. Senior Lance Turner switched from fullback and is now working out with the defensive backs while redshirt-freshman Jonathan Loving moved from the offensive line to defensive line.

Wednesday’s scheduled time is set for 4-6:30 p.m.
