Defending I-AA
Thank you, I-AA Supporters!
I-AA Football fans, we asked for your help, and you really came through! Our extensive online survey is now closed, and the real work begins -- analyzing, sharing, and interpreting an amazing amount of data on the NCAA's premiere football championship... We had over 1600 replies -- no small response, considering that early results indicated that respondents spent a median amount of over 10 minutes each filling out the survey. Over 25% supplied significant additional input (suggestions or other feedback) beyond the objective, listed responses. We heard from fans from every niche within I-AA, and from coaches, athletic directors, referees, professional media, student-athletes, and more... We look forward to sharing the impressive insights you have contributed, and none too soon -- the NCAA Convention (including meetings of the Div. I Management Council and Div. I Board of Directors) and I-AA Football Committees both convene this month. Never before has this much useful information been available to the stewards of the NCAA's premiere football championship. Thanks again for your help and for supporting college football!

Spinning classification problems as a “tradition”
A meeting at the end of the Association's 99th year tidily summed up the ceaseless pressures that constantly remake the NCAA -- and provided a glimpse of what is shaping up to be an important story during the Centennial year.

I-AA foe may not hurt LSU's BCS standing
The prospect of LSU having to play Appalachian State on Saturday, an NCAA Division I-AA opponent, has had many Tigers fans concerned about what such a game would do to whatever hopes LSU has of making it to the BCS national championship game in the Rose Bowl. But according to BCS researcher Brad Edwards of ESPN, playing a quality I-AA opponent like 6-2 Appalachian State isn't nearly as big a hit to LSU's schedule strength as was last week's 56-3 romp over now 2-5 North Texas.

I-AA interests balk at playing Div II FB
BALTIMORE -- Division II's effort to change how the Association views football classification encountered strong tailwinds and heavy headwinds during the same September 27 meeting. The Division II Football Task Force meeting included several Division I-AA representatives who reacted positively to efforts to create postseason opportunities for Divisions I and II programs that offer few or no scholarships. However, Division I-AA's fully funded programs appeared less enthusiastic about a proposal that would decouple Divisions I and II football from the traditional NCAA membership classification system…

Apparently waterproof rhetoric returns
With the new college football season having just begun, any coach will tell you it is way too early to start thinking about bowl season. But that is precisely what those who care about the future of intercollegiate athletics and the NCAA need to do. In recent years, the NCAA has made significant progress in addressing many key issues facing athletics. Despite the successes, one critical component remains in desperate need of reform -- Division I-A postseason play. This system comprises all the postseason bowl games, and it currently operates outside the jurisdiction of the NCAA. The only control the NCAA exerts in postseason football is the rather minor role of certifying the bowls.

Cabinet opposes extending transfer exception to all sports
BALTIMORE -- Legislative proposals regarding transfers dominated discussion at the Division I Academics/ Eligibility/ Compliance Cabinet's September 7-9 meeting. The cabinet's continuing-eligibility subcommittee initially reviewed transfer proposals and developed an academically based framework to evaluate specific pieces. That philosophy included the impact on student-athlete well-being and the academic impact of a transfer situation on a student-athlete, regardless of the reason for the transfer.

I-A beat writer sees beyond administrative labels
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State players flunked the pop quiz. What is Montana State’s nickname? Which conference do they play in? Name the quarterback. What city is the campus located? Who is the head coach?

I-AA Name Change Not Necessary
While football teams are preparing to play their games this fall, let us play the name game. Athletic directors and conference commissioners are among a host of folks wondering if there isn't a better name for NCAA Division I-AA football.

Hack observer unleashes scheduling critique
HOUSTON (Ticker) - Several Big 12 Conference schools watered down their schedules for the 2005 season, to the benefit of their won-lost records and the detriment of college football. Florida International and Florida Atlantic, both in their first season as full-time members of Division I, will open with two games each against Big 12 opponents.

Senator pushes SC schools to schedule state's I-AA teams
Nothing against Florida Atlantic, but Chip Limehouse can name six schools in the state of South Carolina that USC and Clemson ought to be playing instead of the Howard Schnellenberger-coached team from Boca Raton, Fla. Limehouse, a state senator from Charleston, wrote letters last month to Clemson President James Barker and USC President Andrew Sorensen encouraging them to consider adding the state's Division I-AA programs to future football schedules.
