Grambling State head football coach Melvin Spears was very pleased with College GameDay showcasing the Bayou Classic. He feels that this is a monumental event which was a long time coming. "This is the vision of Eddie G. Robinson, Collie J. Nicholson and R.W.E. Jones about being the best and that hard work really pays off. Coach Rob' (Eddie Robinson) always talked about anything is possible in America. It is a great compliment to all of our great players such as Paul "Tank" Younger, Willie Davis, Buck Buchanan, Willie Brown, Charlie Joiner, Doug Williams, James Harris and Sammy White who helped to pave the way for today's ballplayers here at Grambling. It is also a great opportunity for our both the conference (SWAC) and the institution." "The Bayou Classic is much more than what happens on the gridiron," said Dr. Angelia Weaver, Grambling State's State Farm Bayou Classic coordinator. "It is about the history, tradition, fierce competition and a fight for national bragging rights for the year," she said. Perhaps one of the most spirited rivalries in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), the annual gridiron clash between the Tigers and the Jaguars, marks the first historically black college and university (HBCU) football classic to be featured on College GameDay in the television show's 19-year history. "By far, the State Farm Bayou Classic is the most distinguishable collgiate sporting event," stated Cydni Bickerstaff, of Bickerstaff, Sports and Entertainment, the event management company for the Classic. "The fans will get the ultimate game day experience courtesy of ESPN and College GameDay."
