Atlantic 10 FB Conf.
PHILADELPHIA, PA - New Hampshire quarterback Ricky Santos has been named the Atlantic 10 Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year and safety Tony LeZotte of James Madison has been named Defensive Player of the Year in voting conducted among the league’s head coaches. In that same vote, Massachusetts punter Christian Koegel was selected as the Atlantic 10's Special Teams Player of the Year, Richmond defensive lineman Sherman Logan was named Defensive Rookie of the Year and fullback Joe Casey of Rhode Island earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Dave Clawson of Richmond was chosen as Coach of the Year. Santos is the first sophomore to earn Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year honors since former New Hampshire running back Jerry Azumah in 1996. The Bellingham, MA, resident enters this weekend’s NCAA playoff game with Colgate leading the Conference in five offensive categories, including passing yards (3,200) and touchdown passes (33). A five-time A-10 Offensive Player of the Week selection in 2005, Santos leads the nation in completion percentage (71.1) and ranks in the top 10 nationally in passing efficiency (171.6 - third) and total offense (312.2 - fourth). He surpassed the 300-yard passing mark six times this season - tops in the A-10. Santos has also rushed for 234 yards and seven touchdowns. One of 16 candidates for the Walter Payton Award, which is presented to the top player in I-AA, Santos led the Wildcats to a share of the Atlantic 10 title with a 7-1 record and an overall mark of 10-1. New Hampshire is ranked No. 1 in both The Sports Network and ESPN/USA Today top 25 polls and is the top seed in the I-AA playoffs. LeZotte collected 95 tackles and broke up seven passes in anchoring a JMU defense that leads the Conference in rushing yards per game (106.8) and ranks fifth nationally in scoring (15.2 ppg). The Augusta, GA, native shares the league-lead with three forced fumbles. He also recovered a pair of fumbles and tied an Atlantic 10 record with a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown on Nov. 19 in the Dukes’ 55-14 win over Towson. In addition, Le Zotte is the first player to earn first-team Atlantic 10 All-Conference acclaim as a freshman and sophomore since former Boston University offensive lineman Bob Speight (1978-79). Koegel leads the Atlantic 10 and ranks fourth nationally with a 43.0 average on 49 punts. The junior dropped 18 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line and has boomed at least one 50-yard punt in 14 of his last 19 contests. Casey rushed 235 times for a league-high 1,245 yards - the most ever by a URI freshman and second-most in school history. The Syracuse, NY, resident scored eight touchdowns and topped the 100-yard rushing mark in six of the Rams’ 11 contests. His 113.2 rushing yards per game is the highest average by an A-10 freshman since New Hampshire’s Azumah (138.1) in 1995. Logan leads the A-10 with 8.5 sacks with 11 of his 43 tackles coming behind the line of scrimmage. The first-year performer from Virginia Beach, VA, registered 22 solo stops and added a fumble recovery for a Spiders’ defense that ranks second in the Conference in both rushing (115.2 ypg) and rushing touchdowns allowed (eight). Among those on the All-Conference first-team offense include Massachusetts junior running back Steve Baylark, a three-time 1,000-yard rusher and two-time first-team selection; junior wide receiver and Walter Payton Award candidate David Ball of New Hampshire, who leads I-AA in touchdown catches (18) while hauling in 68 passes for a league-leading 1,190 yards; and Northeastern senior offensive linemen Ryan Gibbons, who garnered All-Conference honors for the third consecutive year. The first-team defense includes four-time All-Conference and three-time first-team honoree Brian Hulea of Villanova, a Buck Buchanan Award candidate who leads the A-10 in tackles (135); fellow Buchanan Award candidate Shannon James of Massachusetts, who leads all of Division I with 20 career interceptions; and Villanova senior defensive lineman Darrell Adams, a three-time first-team selection. Clawson earns his first Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honor for leading Richmond to a share of its first league title since 2000 with a 7-1 Conference mark. Boasting an 8-3 overall record, the Spiders visit Hampton this weekend in the opening round of the I-AA playoffs - the program’s first NCAA appearance since 2000. Richmond’s five-game win improvement from a year ago is the best of any team in the 2005 playoff field and tops in the league. UR currently owns a seven-game winning streak - the longest in the A-10 this season - and is ranked No. 12 in both The Sports Network and ESPN/USA Today polls. Clawson, a 1989 graduate of Williams, is in his second season at Richmond, where he has compiled an 11-11 record. He owns a mark of 40-40 overall. 2005 ATLANTIC 10 FOOTBALL ALL-CONFERENCE OFFENSE First-Team Ricky Santos New Hampshire QB So. 6-2 215 Bellingham, MA 256-360, 3200, 33 TD, 171.6 eff.
